Ismail AS was a prophet, the son of Ibrahim AS and Hajar, left as an infant in the barren valley of Makkah. He married into the Qahtani tribe of Jurhum, so his descendants took on Arabic, and from his line came Adnan, ancestor of the Adnani Arabs, among them the Quraysh and the Prophet ﷺ. With his father he built the Ka'bah and its rites, whose religion the Arabs kept until idolatry was introduced; the Hijr Ismail beside the Ka'bah bears his name.
The number of generations between Ismail and Adnan is unknown, with al-Tabari recording opinions from seven to forty-one. He was ransomed from sacrifice, as was the Prophet ﷺ's father Abdullah, so both the first and last of the Prophet ﷺ's line were ransomed by Allah.
