Al-As ibn Wa'il was a rich chieftain and seasoned statesman of the Quraysh, one of the bitterest enemies of the Prophet ﷺ, and the father of Amr ibn al-As RA. Before prophethood his refusal to pay a Yemeni merchant of Zubayd led the Quraysh to form the Hilf al-Fudul to protect the wronged. When the Prophet ﷺ's infant son Abdullah died, al-As is said to have rejoiced that his line was cut off, and Allah revealed Surah al-Kawthar. Yet when Umar RA publicly announced his Islam and was attacked, it was al-As who took him under his protection.

This is the closing ayah of Surah al-Kawthar, revealed after al-As ibn Wa'il mocked the Prophet ﷺ as having no surviving sons -- the ayah responds that it is al-As's own line that is truly "cut off."
