After the death of his infant son Abdullah, al-As ibn Wa'il mocked Muhammad ﷺ, celebrating in the streets of Makkah that the Prophet ﷺ's progeny had been cut off. In response, Allah revealed Surah al-Kawthar [Quran, 108:1-3].
Allah answered al-As ibn Wa'il's taunt by promising the Prophet ﷺ abundance (al-Kawthar) and declaring that it is the one who mocked him who is truly cut off. The three short ayahs were especially beloved to the Prophet ﷺ. It is also the river of al-Kawthar in Jannah given uniquely to the Prophet ﷺ, from which all the other rivers of Jannah split.
