Zayd ibn Harithah, a boy of about 7 or 8 from a Yemeni tribe, was visiting his mother Su'da bint Tha'laba's tribe when a fight broke out between his father's and mother's tribes. Enraged distant relatives on his mother's side kidnapped him and sold him into slavery at the great fair of Ukkadh; to spite his father's tribe, since in Jahiliyyah a son took his father's lineage. He was bought there by Hakim ibn Hizam, Khadija bint Khuwaylid RA's nephew, for 400 dirhams, on money she had given him to find her a young slave, making Zayd her servant, years before her marriage to Muhammad ﷺ.
The origin of Zayd's presence in Khadija RA's household, and from there, through her later marriage and gift of him to Muhammad ﷺ, of one of the closest father-son bonds of the Prophet ﷺ's life. It also set in motion his father Harithah's years-long search for him, which led to the ransom episode and Zayd's eventual adoption.
