What happened

At the end of the Battle of Uhud, Abu Sufyan had called out that the two sides would meet again one year later at Badr. In Sha'ban of the 4th year of the Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ marched out with around 1,500 sahaba, with Ali ibn Abi Talib RA as flag bearer, and camped at Badr for over a week awaiting the Quraysh. The Quraysh had gathered an army of about 2,000 but marched out half-heartedly; citing a year of drought and hardship, they turned back without engaging.

Outcome: The Quraysh abandoned the confrontation and returned to Makkah without fighting.

Significance

Shows the Quraysh could no longer live up to their own challenges, and that the balance of strength was shifting toward the Muslims.
