~c. 96 AH (c. 714-715 CE)
In approximately 96 AH, the Umayyad khalifah al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan demolished the original Masjid al-Nabawi and rebuilt it as a large, decorative, solid structure, more than doubling its size in every direction and adding 15 rows even toward the qibla (so that the Prophet ﷺ's original minbar now sits 15 rows behind where the imam leads salah). He incorporated the grave of the Prophet ﷺ and the house of Aisha RA into the masjid, and destroyed the houses of the other sahaba around it. Tabi'un objected: Sa'id ibn Jubayr said graves should not be inside a masjid, and others protested that the heritage showing how simply the Prophet ﷺ and the Mothers of the Believers lived was being destroyed. Al-Walid proceeded regardless.
This is the only expansion in history to enlarge Masjid al-Nabawi in all four directions, and it created the enduring, disputed practice of the Prophet ﷺ's grave sitting within the masjid's walls.
