This unnamed man was a son of Umayyah ibn Khalaf and a brother of Safwan ibn Umayyah. Neither was a Muslim when both went out with the Muslim army to Hunayn in 8 AH. When the Muslims were ambushed and began to flee, he said, "Good. Today, the magic spell will be broken," meaning that the Prophet ﷺ, whom he regarded as a magician, would finally be defeated. Safwan rebuked him: "Shut up! May Allah destroy all of your teeth! For by Allah, I would rather be ruled by a Qureshi than by a Hawazini!" Safwan's loyalty came from tribal pride, not faith, which shows the mindset the Prophet ﷺ was dealing with among the newest arrivals of that day.
