Amir ibn Rabi'ah RA was an early Muslim of Makkah who emigrated to Abyssinia with his wife Layla in the first emigration. When Layla told him that Umar ibn al-Khattab, then a persecutor, had spoken to her with compassion as they prepared to leave, Amir scoffed that the donkeys of Umar's father would accept Islam before he did. The story is remembered as a lesson never to give up hope for anyone. He returned to Makkah on the false rumour of the Quraysh's conversion.
