In the years after the Prophet ﷺ's death, as wealth and good food began flowing into Madinah, companions who had lived through his lifetime were moved to tears recalling how little he had eaten. When good food was brought to Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf RA, he wept, recalling that the Prophet ﷺ never ate his fill of wheat bread, not even his own family, and worried that he and the other surviving companions were receiving their reward too soon, in this world, while the Prophet ﷺ had gone on to something better in the next. Aisha RA, the Prophet ﷺ's wife, wept for the same reason whenever good food was given to her in the decades she outlived him.
The grief of companions living in later prosperity underscores how deliberately austere the Prophet ﷺ's own life had been by comparison.
Till the day the Prophet ﷺ died, he never ate wheat bread to his fill, and not even his family! I worry that Allah has allowed us to remain for such a long time that we are seeing all of these blessings come, while the Prophet ﷺ has gone on to something that is better.
The Prophet ﷺ never ate even crusty or hard bread to his fill in his life.
