In revenge for the killing of their chieftain Khalid ibn Sufyan, the tribe of Hudhayl paid Udal and al-Qara to pretend to accept Islam, travel to Madinah, and beg the Prophet ﷺ to send teachers of the Quran and religion. Ten sahaba under Asim ibn Thabit volunteered. At the Well of al-Raji, 100 warriors ambushed them. The sahaba took a hilltop position and fought until Asim and most of the others were killed. The last three, Khubayb ibn Adi, Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, and Abdullah ibn Tariq, surrendered on a promise of safety that was immediately broken; Abdullah ibn Tariq was killed on the spot for refusing captivity, while Khubayb and Zayd were taken to Makkah and sold to be executed in revenge for men they had killed at Badr and Uhud.
