Al-Zubayr ibn Bata was an elderly nobleman of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayzah who, during the siege of the Trench in 5 AH, foresaw that the Qurayzah would be left alone to face the sword if the confederates went home. Years earlier, in the war of Bu'ath, he had saved Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas RA, who after the surrender obtained from the Prophet ﷺ his life, his family and his wealth. Learning that all his friends had been executed, al-Zubayr said life had no meaning without them and asked to be sent to his death.
