Ya'qub AS was a prophet, the son of Ishaq AS and grandson of Ibrahim AS, given as glad tidings to Sarah, and the father of Yusuf AS. When the Quraysh tested the Prophet ﷺ about the family of Ya'qub, Allah revealed Surah Yusuf. The Qur'an records his complaint to Allah in his grief [12:86], which the Prophet ﷺ echoed after Ta'if.
“We gave her [Sarah] good tidings of Ishaq, and after Ishaq, Ya'qub.”
This ayah directly names Ya'qub (AS) as the second glad tiding given to Sarah, after Ishaq.
“We blessed him with Ishaq and [later] Ya'qub, and reserved prophethood and revelation for his descendants.”
This ayah directly names Ya'qub (AS) among the line of prophethood Allah reserved for Ibrahim (AS)'s descendants.
