Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith RA was a first cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, son of al-Harith, eldest son of Abd al-Muttalib, and a different man from Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. A poet, he mocked Islam and the Prophet ﷺ throughout the Makkan years. In 8 AH, as the Muslims marched on Makkah, he came with Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah to seek forgiveness, and after being turned away pleaded until the Prophet ﷺ let them in and accepted their repentance. Weeks later at Hunayn, he was among the few who stood firm beside the Prophet ﷺ, gripping the stirrup of his mule, proof of his sincerity.
