عَفَا اللَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَتَعْلَمَ الْكَاذِبِينَ
“Allah will forgive you [O Prophet]! [But] why did you accept all of their excuses? You should have waited until you test those who have told the truth against those who have lied.”
Allah's mild rebuke of the Prophet ﷺ for accepting the excuse-makers' oaths at face value on his return from Tabuk.
This ayah rebukes the Prophet ﷺ for granting permission before Allah judged the true intentions of those who stayed behind from Tabuk -- the exact moment the post narrates.
