قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ
“Say, 'If you truly love Allah, then follow me. Allah will love you and forgive your sins.'”
Aali Imran 3:31 falls within the opening block of Surah Aali Imran (v.1-~80) that Ibn Ishaq's Sira explicitly ties to the Najran Christian delegation's debate over Isa/Christian doctrine.
“They plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.”
Cited regarding Abu Sufyan's providential escape from interception.
إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَىٰ عِندَ اللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ آدَمَ ۖ خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ
“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, 'Be,' and he was.”
Revealed in answer to the Najran delegation's question about the fatherhood of Isa ibn Maryam.
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَأَبْنَاءَكُمْ وَنِسَاءَنَا وَنِسَاءَكُمْ وَأَنفُسَنَا وَأَنفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَل لَّعْنَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَاذِبِينَ
“Then whoever [still] argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you, say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us].'”
The Ayat al-Mubahala, revealed at the end of the second day of debate with the Najran delegation.
قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَىٰ كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا فَقُولُوا اشْهَدُوا بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ
“Say, [O Prophet,] 'O People of the Book! Let us come to common terms: that we will worship none but God, associate none with Him, nor take one another as lords instead of God.' But if they turn away, then say, 'Bear witness that we have submitted [to God alone].'”
Per Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet's ﷺ letter to Heraclius closes by quoting this ayah, inviting him to "a word common between us and you."
مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُّسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
“Ibrahim was neither Yahudi nor Nasrani. Rather, he was a pure hanif that was a Muslim; and he was not of the pagans.”
Revealed correcting the Najran delegation's claim that Ibrahim AS was a Christian.
أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ
“The first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah.”
Cited as the foundational verse establishing the Ka'bah as the first House of worship.
وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا
“Whoever enters it [i.e., the Haram] shall be safe.”
This ayah's declaration that "whoever enters it shall be safe" is part of the Qur'an's confirmation of the sanctuary status Ibrahim (AS) established for Makkah at this event.
“They will be stricken with disgrace wherever they go, unless they are protected by a covenant with Allah or a treaty with the people.”
Cited regarding the Banu Nadir's inability to stand independently in war, hence their need to instigate the Quraysh and Ghatafan.
“There were two groups about to give up, but Allah is their Protector [so Allah protected them]. And in Allah the people who put their trust should put their trust”
On the Banu Harithah and Banu Salama nearly withdrawing with the hypocrites before Uhud.
لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ شَيْءٌ أَوْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ ظَالِمُونَ
“Not for you, [O Muhammad, but for Allah] is the decision whether He should [cut them down] or forgive them or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers”
Revealed after the Muslims returned to Madinah from Uhud, in response to the Prophet ﷺ's remark upon being wounded.
“a Jannah that is as broad as the skies and the earth”
The Tanukhi messenger's question in the post directly references this ayah's description of Paradise as "broad as the heavens and the earth."
وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ ۚ أَفَإِن مَّاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ ۚ وَمَن يَنقَلِبْ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا ۗ وَسَيَجْزِي اللَّهُ الشَّاكِرِينَ
“Muhammad is no more than a Messenger; other Messengers have gone before him. If he were to die or to be killed, would you regress into disbelief? Those who do so will not harm Allah whatsoever. And Allah will reward those who are grateful.”
Recited by Abu Bakr RA to the Masjid on the day the Prophet ﷺ died; originally revealed at Uhud.
“Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you [initially] swept them away by His Will, then your courage weakened and you disputed about the command and disobeyed after Allah had brought victory within your reach. Some of you were after worldly gain while others desired a heavenly reward. He denied you victory over them as a test, yet He has pardoned you. And Allah is Gracious to the believers.”
Revealed about the archers' dispute and disobedience at Uhud after the initial victory.
“[Remember] when you were running far away [in panic] -- not looking at anyone -- while the Messenger was calling to you from behind!”
Describes the Muslims fleeing in panic from Khalid ibn al-Walid's counterattack while the Prophet ﷺ called them back from behind.
“...And consult with them in [conducting] matters. Once you make a decision, put your trust in Allah”
Cited for the principle of shura illustrated in the council before Uhud.
“If Allah helps you, none can defeat you”
Closing exhortation cited at the end of the account of the 700 who marched to Uhud.
أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُم مِّثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّىٰ هَٰذَا ۖ قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
“Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the Day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the Battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, 'From where is this?' Say, 'It is from yourselves.' Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.”
Cited for the ~70 Muslim casualties at Uhud, by comparison with the ~140 mushrikun killed at Badr.
وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“So what you suffered on the day the two armies met was by Allah's Will, so that He might distinguish the [true] believers”
On the trial of the two armies meeting at Uhud.
وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا۟ ۚ وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوِ ٱدْفَعُوا۟ ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَوْ نَعْلَمُ قِتَالًۭا لَّٱتَّبَعْنَـٰكُمْ ۗ هُمْ لِلْكُفْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْهُمْ لِلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِم مَّا لَيْسَ فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَكْتُمُونَ
“and expose the hypocrites. When it was said to them, 'Come fight in the cause of Allah, or [at least] defend yourselves,' they replied, 'If we had known there was fighting, we would have definitely gone with you.' They were closer to disbelief than to belief on that day — for saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. Allah is All-Knowing of what they hide”
Exposing the hypocrites who withdrew on the march to Uhud.
“Those who responded to Allah and His Messenger after they were wounded, those of them who did good and were mindful [of Allah] will have a great reward.”
Praises the ~70 sahaba who marched to Hamra al-Asad despite their wounds from Uhud.
“Allah is not going to allow the Muslims to remain in status quo until he separates the filthy from the pure”
Cited for Allah separating the sincere believers from the hypocrites through the trial of Uhud.
