This unnamed Companion described how his people had worshiped before Islam: "Before Islam came, we worshiped rocks and stones, and if we found a rock that looked more beautiful than the one we were worshiping, we would throw the old one away and put the new one in its place." If they were traveling in the desert and could find no rock, they would heap up sand, squeeze milk from a goat over it to make it firm, and circle around the pile in worship. His recollection shows how deeply idolatry had taken hold in pre-Islamic Arabia.
