This unnamed man was one of the Jews of Madinah when the Muslims' qibla was changed from Bayt al-Maqdis, the qibla of the Jews, to the Ka'bah in Makkah, some fifteen or sixteen months after the Hijrah. Offended that the Muslims had turned away from it, he asked, "Isn't our qibla good enough for him?" The Qur'an had foretold that the foolish among the people would question the change [2:142], and Surah al-Baqarah answered their objections.
