This unnamed man was one of the hypocrites of Madinah during the siege of Khandaq in 5 AH. As the confederate armies pressed in, the hypocrites sought permission to leave the trench on the pretext of protecting their families, when in truth they were afraid to face the enemy. In a gathering of them, this man said aloud, "Here was Muhammad ﷺ promising us the treasures of Kisra and Qaisar, and now one of us is too scared to even go defecate!" Surah al-Ahzab exposed the hypocrisy that the siege brought into the open.
