This unnamed man of Banu Salama was with the army at Tabuk in 9 AH. When the Prophet ﷺ, sitting among the people, asked what had become of Ka'b ibn Malik RA, this man said, "Ya Rasulullah, his two garments, and his looking at his own property, have kept him back," suggesting that love of his fine clothes and wealth had kept Ka'b at home. Mu'adh ibn Jabal RA rebuked him at once for what he had said and defended Ka'b before the Prophet ﷺ. When Ka'b later told the story, he did not name the man.
