This unnamed Companion was in Madinah in 9 AH when the opening verses of Surah al-Tawba were revealed, after Abu Bakr RA had already set out to lead the Hajj. He asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Why don't you send these verses to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq?" The Prophet ﷺ replied that no one should convey these verses on his behalf except someone from his own household. He chose Ali ibn Abi Talib RA, who had not been part of the pilgrimage party, and told him to catch up with Abu Bakr and proclaim the verses to the people during the Hajj.
