This Companion was present when the Prophet ﷺ's infant son Ibrahim was dying in 10 AH. The Prophet ﷺ held the wheezing child in his hands and wept. The Companion, surprised, asked, "You also cry, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?", which shows how rarely the Prophet ﷺ was seen weeping in public. He replied, "The eyes cry and the heart is sad, but we only say that which pleases our Lord," and said that were it not for Allah's decree and the promise of reunion, their grief at Ibrahim's parting would have been even greater. In the version recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, the one who asked is named as Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf RA, and the Prophet ﷺ answered him, "O Ibn Awf, this is mercy."
