This unnamed Companion once asked the Prophet ﷺ which masjid Allah meant by "a mosque founded on taqwa from the first day" [9:108]. The Prophet ﷺ answered, "Indeed, wallahi, it is this masjid of mine," meaning Masjid al-Nabawi, in a hadith recorded by al-Tirmidhi. Most commentators understand the verse to refer to Masjid Quba, since it sits near the masjid of the hypocrites mentioned in the same passage, and a hadith in Abu Dawud links the verse to the people of Quba. Scholars reconcile the two by saying the verse applies to both, and that the Prophet ﷺ named his own masjid so that no one would think Quba ranked above it.
