This unnamed man was traveling with a caravan through the desert during the Hijrah. Travelers who met in the desert would stop to greet each other and share news, so when the caravan saw two riders in the distance, it turned toward them. This man, who was not of the Quraysh and had not heard of the bounty on the fugitives, recognized Abu Bakr RA. After greeting him, he asked, "Who is this man with you?" Abu Bakr answered, "He is my guide, guiding me to the path." The traveler took it to mean an ordinary guide, while Abu Bakr meant that the Prophet ﷺ was guiding him on the path to Jannah. This kind of double meaning, tawriya, conceals without lying. The exchange also shows that the hired guide Abdullah ibn Urayqit had parted from them by then.
