This unnamed man of the Aws was present in the masjid in 5 AH when the Prophet ﷺ spoke publicly about the slander against Aisha RA. When he asked who would deal with the man who had hurt his family, a leader of the Aws offered to kill him if he was of the Aws, or to do as commanded if he was of the Khazraj. Sa'd ibn Ubadah RA of the Khazraj, overcome by the old tribal feeling, spoke against him. This man then rose against Sa'd: "Rather, you are the liar! And we WILL kill him! You are just a munafiq fighting on behalf of the other munafiqin!" Old tribal passions between the Aws and Khazraj flared, and the Prophet ﷺ had to calm both sides. The episode shows how tribalism could still surface even among the Companions.
