This unnamed angel came down to the Prophet ﷺ while he was sitting with Jibril AS, according to a narration in Musnad Imam Ahmad. Jibril told the Prophet ﷺ that Allah had permitted this angel to descend for the first time since the beginning of creation. The angel said, "Ya Muhammad ﷺ, assalamu'alayka. Your Lord has sent me to ask you a question. Do you want to be a malikan-rasula or an abdan-rasula?", a messenger-king or a messenger-slave. Jibril signaled to him to humble himself before Allah, and the Prophet ﷺ answered, "I choose to be an abdan-rasula." The narrator said that after this the Prophet ﷺ was never again seen eating while reclining against a wall, and he gave away all the enormous wealth that later came to him, keeping nothing for himself.
