Sa'd ibn Ubadah RA was the chief of the Khazraj and, with Sa'd ibn Mu'adh RA of the Aws, one of the two leaders of the Ansar; after Sa'd ibn Mu'adh's death he was their leading man. He was famous for his generosity, sometimes feeding as many as eighty of the People of the Suffah at once. At the Trench the two Sa'ds refused, unless it was revelation, to buy off Ghatafan with Madinah's dates, and during the slander against Aisha RA his tribal zeal flared against the Aws. He commanded the Ansar at the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH until the banner was taken from him, and after Hunayn spoke to the Prophet ﷺ for the Ansar over the spoils. After the Prophet ﷺ's death, the Companions met in his garden to decide on the caliph.
