Quss ibn Sa'ida was a renowned orator and poet of Banu Iyad and one of the hunafa' of pre-Islamic Arabia, who came to Makkah for the pilgrimage and preached against idolatry, calling people to reflect on death and the nations that had passed. The Prophet ﷺ saw him speak from a red camel as a young man. Decades later, when the delegation of Banu Iyad came to accept Islam in 9 AH, the Prophet ﷺ asked after Quss, learned he had long since died, and liked hearing his words recited. His story shows that remnants of tawhid survived in pre-Islamic Arabia.
