Muhallim ibn Juthama was a member of a small expedition before the Conquest of Makkah who killed Amir ibn al-Adbat al-Ashja'i, a secret Muslim who had greeted the party with salam, out of an old feud, and took his belongings. Allah revealed [4:94], forbidding the believers to tell those who offer peace "you are no believer" for worldly gain. After Hunayn the Prophet ﷺ paid the blood money himself but refused to pray for Muhallim's forgiveness. Muhallim died days later, and the earth is reported to have cast out his body again and again, a warning the Prophet ﷺ said showed the sanctity of life.

“O believers! When you struggle in the cause of Allah, be sure of who you fight. And do not say to those who offer you [greetings of] peace, "You are no believer!" -- seeking a fleeting worldly gain. Instead, Allah has infinite bounties [in store]. You were initially like them, then Allah blessed you [with Islam]. So be sure! Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”
Warns against refusing to accept someone's offered salam out of a desire for worldly gain, as Muhallim did to Amir.
