Malik AS is the angel who guards Jahannam, named in Surah al-Zukhruf [43:77]. On the night of al-Isra wal-Mi'raj, Jibril AS told the Prophet ﷺ to greet him, and Malik gave salam first. The Prophet ﷺ noticed his sadness, and Jibril explained that Malik had never smiled or laughed since he was created, and that had he ever smiled for anyone, it would have been for the Prophet ﷺ.
