This unnamed man was the king of Ghassan, the largest Arab Christian tribe and the Arab vassals of Rome on the Syrian frontier. In 9 AH, during the fifty-day boycott of Ka'b ibn Malik RA and the two other Companions who had stayed behind from Tabuk, news reached him that Ka'b, a leading man of the Ansar, was being shunned in Madinah. He sent him a letter through a Nabataean trader who had come to Madinah to sell grain and who asked around for Ka'b. The letter read: "Amma ba'd: it has been conveyed to us that your friend has treated you harshly, and Allah would not allow you to live at a place where you are inferior and your rights are lost, so join us and we will console you." Ka'b recognized it as another test, and he threw the letter into an oven and burned it.
