Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-As RA was a senior Companion of the Quraysh and a distant cousin of the Prophet ﷺ. When the delegation of Thaqif came from Ta'if in Ramadan 9 AH to negotiate their entry into Islam, he served as the go-between through at least ten days of talks, eating first so the fearful delegates would trust their food. Through him they tried to bargain away the obligations of Islam one by one, until they finally accepted that al-Lat would be destroyed, though not by their own hands.
