Fihr ibn Malik was the Prophet ﷺ's ancestor twelve generations back and, by the stronger opinion, the true forbear of the Quraysh: all of its dozen or so clans in the Prophet ﷺ's time, and all ten Companions promised Paradise, meet in his line. "Quraysh" was a title, variously explained as meaning to trade, to gather or to conquer, that stuck to him and passed to his descendants. He lived around the first century CE.
