This unnamed Companion, returning from Tabuk in 9 AH, overheard hypocrites mocking the Prophet ﷺ's promise of conquests and the reciters of the Qur'an, rebuked them, and rode to report it. Revelation had already come quoting the hypocrite's excuse that they were only joking, and the Companion described seeing the man dragged holding the stirrup of the Prophet ﷺ's camel as the Prophet ﷺ repeated, "Make no excuses. You have committed kufr after your iman."
