This unnamed Companion was with the army at Tabuk in 9 AH. Some sincere Muslims, known as al-Bakka'un, "the weepers," had stayed behind in tears because they had no mounts. At Tabuk the Prophet ﷺ said that there were people in Madinah who had been with the army at every step and in every valley it crossed, and who would share its reward. This Companion asked, "Ya Rasulullah, even while they are in Madinah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Even while they are in Madinah," because they had a genuine excuse. The hadith shows the value of a sincere intention.
