This unnamed man was a chieftain of Kindah, a large tribe that had once been a prestigious kingdom, whom the Prophet ﷺ approached in the last Makkan years seeking protection for his message. Interested in the message as a means to power, he asked whether his tribe would inherit the rule after the Prophet ﷺ if they supported him. When the Prophet ﷺ answered that the kingdom belongs to Allah, who gives it to whom He pleases, the chieftain refused, having no use for a message that did not bring power.
