This unnamed man of the Ansar was very poor, and when the Prophet ﷺ called for donations for Tabuk in 9 AH, he hauled water all night to earn two handfuls of dates and gave one. When the hypocrites mocked his gift, Allah revealed that He would throw their mockery back at them [9:79].
