Amr ibn Hazm al-Ansari RA

Amr ibn Hazm al-Ansari RA was a Companion of the Ansar whom the Prophet ﷺ appointed as governor and religious leader over Najran, whose people had accepted Islam about four months before the Prophet ﷺ passed away. A month before his death, the Prophet ﷺ sent Amr a letter of instructions. It is one of the most famous letters in the seerah because it was the last letter the Prophet ﷺ dictated in his life. Over a page long, it is a set of commandments on how Amr should teach the people. The jurists discuss one phrase in it above all: "No one should touch the Qur'an except if he is tahir." The hadith of Amr ibn Hazm is the principal evidence for the view of most of the madhahib that one needs wudu to touch the Qur'an.
