Amr ibn Abd Wud was an elder of the Quraysh famed for his ferocity, who had fought at Badr until disabled by wounds. During the siege of the Trench in 5 AH he forced his horse across a narrow part of the trench with a few other horsemen, marked so that his rank could be seen, and challenged the Muslims to single combat. Ali ibn Abi Talib RA asked the Prophet ﷺ's leave to fight him; Amr said he did not want to shed the young man's blood, and Ali RA killed him (Ibn Ishaq).
