Al-Tanukhi was a Christian Arab of the tribe of Tanukh sent by Heraclius as his envoy to the Prophet ﷺ at Tabuk in 9 AH. Heraclius gave him three signs to look for, and he watched the Prophet ﷺ speak of the letters he had sent to kings, answer Heraclius's question with a reference to night, and finally show him the seal of prophethood between his shoulders. He told the story himself in old age in Hims, preserved in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad. His name was not recorded, and some say he later became Muslim while others say he died a Christian.
