Al-Akhnas ibn Shurayq al-Thaqafi, Abu Tha'labah, was a man of Thaqif living in Makkah as an ally of the Banu Zuhrah and one of its notables. He is remembered in the story of the three Quraysh leaders, he, Abu Sufyan and Abu Jahl, who secretly listened to the Prophet ﷺ's night recitation three nights running; when he asked Abu Jahl about it, Abu Jahl admitted his refusal was rivalry between clans. After Ta'if, the Prophet ﷺ first asked al-Akhnas for protection, but he declined as only an ally.
