Abu Waqid al-Laythi RA accepted Islam about a week before the march to Hunayn in 8 AH and narrated the hadith of the Hanging Tree. Passing the pagans' sacred tree Dhat Anwat, he asked the Prophet ﷺ for a tree like it, and the Prophet ﷺ likened the request to the Children of Israel asking Musa AS for an idol. Because he was a new Muslim acting in ignorance, the Prophet ﷺ condemned the statement without condemning him, a case scholars cite on excusing ignorance.
