Abu Khaythama al-Ansari RA was a Companion of the Ansar who very nearly stayed behind from Tabuk in 9 AH. When he gave all he had, a sa' of dates, the hypocrites mocked him and Allah revealed [9:79] condemning them. Lacking a mount, he delayed until the army had gone, but coming home to a cool shaded garden and a meal prepared by his wife, he refused to sit while the Prophet ﷺ was out in the heat and rode alone after the army. At Tabuk the Prophet ﷺ saw a lone rider in the mirage and said, "May it be Abu Khaythama," and it was.

الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ ۙ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
“[There are] those who slander [some of] the believers for donating liberally, and mock others for giving only the little they can afford. Allah will throw their mockery back at them, and they will suffer a painful punishment.”
Defends his sincere small donation against the hypocrites' mockery.
