Opinions range from one to five years before the Hijrah; Ibn Ishaq and most early writers say one year before. Some scholars held that there were two separate journeys, to reconcile differing reports, but most hold there was one, since Allah says "laylan", a single night, in Surah al-Isra 17:1. Several details in the account were not found in the classical sources checked: the state of the Temple site under Roman rule, the house of Aqil, Abu Jahl finding him first and calling it sorcery, the claim that more Companions narrate this night than the rest of the Makkan period, the report that Khadija RA died before the prayer was made obligatory, and the statement that the prayer was the one obligation given without Jibril AS as intermediary.
